Coreso’s report on the first HVDC coordination trial in the North Sea

26 June 2026

Coreso is pleased to publish the report on the first HVDC coordination trial conducted in the North Sea region in November 2025, in close cooperation with Transmission System Operators (TSOs).

As Europe’s electricity system becomes increasingly interconnected, managing power flows efficiently across borders remains a key challenge. When congestion occurs on the grid, TSOs often need to rely on remedial actions to maintain operational security. These measures can be effective but may come at a significant cost.

Coreso, together with its TSO shareholders, explored an innovative approach to relieve onshore congestion by simultaneously adjusting electricity flows on several HVDC (High-Voltage Direct Current) interconnectors. And this without changing the overall energy exchange between countries, and without affecting any generator.

In November, we demonstrated that this coordination can be carried out safely and precisely between TSO-RCC control rooms. Thanks to the flexibility and controllability of HVDC technology, these adjustments can be made quickly and accurately, helping optimise energy flows in a secure and efficient way.
